@James Cobert Are you familiar with the Second Life island Virtual Ability? That's a group doing similar work and you might be able to collaborate with them. Here's the slurl to their island: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Virtual%20Ability/170/99/23

I and my team are looking for grants, donations and investors to build a solution for mobile virtual language learning.

My SL group, Cypris Chat, and the island I built for it; Cypris Village, have shown incredible advances in the field of global communications. The fact that we can now visually and anonymously communicate in real time with other countries to share ideas and opinions, or simply to hang out means language learning takes on a whole new focus. I am finding that the members of my group, some of whom spend more than 40 hours a week on our island, are showing clear signs that this environment is not only engaging but encapsulating. The history of communication is changing, "VPals" (instead of pen pals or key pals) should be the new catch phrase. The idea that we can connect virtually in a community that sees relationships from near or afar means learners can easily adjust to the environment; AFK, BRB, Away, private IMing, private voice chat, group chat, IM to email, local chat, local voice, and even bumping into someone and using gestures. The future of communication will turn virtual!

We would like to take this idea and offer it to schools and companies for language learning. Classes can connect in-world with teachers worldwide to do projects and activities that reinforce the performance objective and companies can be provided with training simulations that incorporate English for specific purposes. This is not a new concept, but making it a community that lives together is. I can show you how.

Claudia, a letter of support from Linden Lab would be awesome in our proposals. Any support to help us help the world get one step closer to global connection would be fantastic. I can be reached at mike[@]worldnetjapan.com

Hello all. I am fairly new to SL, just had my first bday! I am a teacher in a k-8 school. very interested in getting students using immersive learning environments like Quest Atlantis, and hopefully in the future, SL.
I am also a grad student at Johns Hopkins, working on a certificate in Out of School Time Learning. I am working on a 21st Century Learning Communities Grant proposal with a African dance group in RL. We are looking for a partner for our proposal. In our RFP, we will be proposing afterschool and summer programs for middle school and high school students in low performing public schools in Baltimore City. Our program will include a technology component that will engage our students using virtual worlds. Any one interested in exploring this idea amd partnering with us can contact me directly. We will be submitting our RFP in 2010. Thanks!

Hi Kate,

You might be interested in this video I took of several people meeting up in RL and SL at the Pixels to Person event in London last January. This is a smaller scale RL2SL event where a lot of the people didn't know each other in RL so there was some social binding together going on to add value to the community:

Leon, that is essentially the kind of presentation that I did at the 2008 Technology in the Arts conference held at the University of Waterloo. I did a live presentation and then projected SL on big screen where I had an avatar panel of experts who spoke about music in Second Life and also a musician who gave a live time demonstration.

This looks like a fascinating group - I propose an idea for a grant to magnify social interaction with educators who have no idea what Virtual Worlds are. We are in the process of offering free conferences with distributed "localised" communities to amplify the interaction between real and virtual. To have Avatar evangelists scaffold and model the social interactions between both the physical and virtua. Once people can experience this first hand from a F2F session but observe a virtual one then the benefits are obvious. I'd certainly be interested in exploring this further with anyone who is curious?
