Hi, everyone! Thanks for allowing me to join this group. I manage the EUROCALL/CALICO HQ in SL in collaboration with my colleague Randall Sadler in the USA: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20III/29/36/22

We have recently set up a joint EUROCALL/CALICO Virtual Worlds SIG. Here is our Ning: http://virtualworldssig.ning.com

Hi all! I thought I would hare with you a video I made of our language learning community. It might be useful to explain what it's like to learn languages in Second Life. Be sure to mention that virtual worlds are responsible for a paradigm shift in the way we communicate internationally. We no longer have key pals, we have vPals. There are some really strong relationships happening here...not to mention marriages. WOW! Is this real or what?! See the HD video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aONJvlne0wI

Cypris Chat English language learning community has opened its new island!

Cypris Village island is home to the Cypris Chat group; a small international not-for-profit community for English language learning. The purpose of our group is to provide a virtual social networking and meeting place for learners and tutors looking to practice teaching or communicating in English. It is our hope to develop international relationships unlike anything we have seen in the history of communication while at the same time developing ways to incorporate language learning into such a motivating and engaging environment.

We are always looking for nice people to help tutor and guide conversations with English learners from around the world. This is a great opportunity to practice teaching and study culture exchange and communication via virtual worlds.

I'm fluent in French but very rusty. I have attempted to use French SL for immersion, but was too new in SL and felt very intimidated. Now that I'm a bit more savvy, I plan to go back to French SL for more immersion so that I can improve. I also want to learn spanish in SL, but haven't gotten around to it, yet.

The Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon is planning a Chinese immersion camp in Second Life this summer (Aug., 2009) targeting intermediate-level learners at age 18 and above. Contact me if you are interested in participating as an intern, student, native Chinese speaker, or camp facilitator. If you have experience organizing language events or summer camps, I would love to talk with you.

I am looking for information just a statement from anyone who has developed/used any virtual world other than Second Life and There for teaching languages. I know SL and There have so many education resources but am curious to know if anyone has used open source software (for example Open Sim etc) to build their own sims/applications for teaching languages for private or commercial. Anyone? I am really interested in hearing about these ideas and concepts.
