It really does work. I was able to communicate with an Uighur Turk from China selecting English-Chinese. His replies made sense so I believe it worked well :) The translations are not perfect, of course, but good enough in most cases. It is important to keep the sentences short and not to use idiomatic expressions.

This is a great tool when working with lower level groups. The teacher can avoid speaking (in voice) in L1 and use the translator instead without the need for a co-teacher. It can also help in mixed-language low-level groups to avoid a communication break-down.
How can this emerging tool be implemented within Second Life in a collaborative manner? Language learning?
Many language teachers are translators, and vice-versa...
