Description

Traditional social presence theories (traditional as in classroom-based, face-to-face) and the few mediated social presence studies (videoconferencing, Blackboard...) have proven that social presence can increase student satisfaction and perceived learning outcomes (Gunawardena & Zittle, 1997; Richardson & Swan, 2003). But there has not been much done on social presence in learning events via desktop 3D immersive environments, such as SL. One recent and promising theory of mediated social presence is the Networked Minds Theory of Social Presence (Harms & Biocca, 2004).

Immediacy is closely related to the concept of social presence. In an environment such as SL in which the instructor and the students' communication is mediated via avatars, which immediacy behaviors support communication, attention and motivation, and promote students' collaboration? What real life immediacy behaviors transfer in SL? or how do they translate?

Let's use this space to talk and share ideas, research and practice as well as to brainstorm on enhancing learning experiences and outcomes with a better knowledge of the social presence affordances of SL.

ARVEL SIG hosts a Center for Social Presence tomorrow Oct 13, 1pm PST/SLT (21:00 GMT). Meet at http://slurl.com/secondlife/CAVE/25/204/35 and then look for the double door to get to the Center's location. We will review the impact of attentive listening postures, smiles, lipsync, pointing and usage of humor. The hands-on activity will focus on personalizing an animation overrider (AO). Cheers, the ARVEL SIG Team (http://www.arvelsig.com/)

What is the difference between presence in Second Life--which is generally described as a feeling of "being there" in a virtual space with other real people, and social presence? Is social presence a part of the overall construct of "presence"--or something wholly different?

Greetings All! What an interesting collection of like minded people. As an educator in K-12 who is interested in using TSL in virtual and hybrid classes, I think I've found a home to share ideas.

Bonnie, yes, absolutely. We can have a rotating schedule so that all time zones can be accommodated. I"ll send a schedule poll soon.
