The Second Life presence of the American Library Association, ALA Island, now has the ALA Island Facebook Fan Page to help announce events and bring attention to virtual library activities overall.

On KidsCom.com we have a program for youth librarians called "Green Spots." We provide bookmarks with codes that can be redeemed for 1000 Virtual Points (our online currency) that librarians can use as rewards. We post the library on our Green Spot listing. And we have bi-monthly off-line missions that send kids to libraries in real life to find information and bring it back to the virtual world.

If anyone is interested in finding out more about the program, please contact me. Or if you have suggestions on what would make it a better program for librarians, please let me know!

I work at a small technical college library. I am exploring new ways to connect with our patrons, use technology innovatively, and provide virtual services.

I work for the College Center for Library Automation in Florida as a Web Designer. We have had a presence in SL for about 18 months and provide access to research materials and the library catalog from within SL. Let me know if I can help anyone, or if you have ideas for us!

My university has a grant to buy an island and I want the library to be there from the start. I've just managed to convince my university librarian to buy into some SL training for me.

I'm working on a project to do with information literacy in SL, but nothing to show as yet. Hoping to have something there by September.

I'm looking for examples of virtual environments that promote/support literacy, emphasis on reading and writing. Can anyone point me towards some?

Thanks!

I'm a new member of this group. I'm currently working with one facuty member on his island and have created tutorials based on one of his assignments. I hope to do the same for other faculty in this coming year.

Would be excited to hear from others doing the same or similar things.

Pam, that's great! Is the teaching you do in SL a "regularly scheduled" class or more a drop in type? Are you finding it vastly different from the process in other venues?

I have a grant to do information literacy teaching in SL and explore the potential.
