I think the way you structured the Whyreef project is brilliant. Not only having kids observe a scientific process - what happens to the beautiful reef when all this dead fish was thrown on it, but also encouraging kids take actions to be active citizens and make change in their virtual community. And, the way you design the project let itself to create a community outside of Whyreef as well - meaning that on forums, kids ask questions, get answers, think about how to preserve the nature, do research... I just love it. The other projects are great too. I Dig Science... giving teens an immersive experience of being paleontologists and experience it with the help of real scientists and collaborate with teens in another city... very valuable. What is the time frame of Whyreef? one year? you said you are creating curriculum for teachers for Whyreef. how can teachers reach to these documents? i will be teaching a course about (educational) potentials of virtual worlds next spring, i would love to give your curriculum as an example of how a well designed virtual world based informal science project turned into a school curriculum. i would love you guys do a project about birds in the future. i think doing science in virtual worlds is very powerful. i am trying to create a project for math - either geometry or number theory. not many examples out there unfortunately. Thank you!

Two quick comments/corrections from the speaker...........
1. Walter Cronkite is alive and well! Sorry Walter for thinking that you were dead. The mention of Cronkite was supposed to be a comparison between Cronkite and a blogger (as an analogy to museums and virtual worlds), but that got derailed and never quite made it out of my mouth.
2. The Field Museum has been incredibly supportive of our exploration or virtual worlds and I did not mean to imply that they were not (or that we were proceeding without their consent). In fact, after a preliminary meeting with Jim Bower of Numedeon to discuss WhyReef, the museum's president was so enthusiastic that he told us this collaboration could pave a whole new path for the museum!
