A Funeral For Teen Second Life: A Presentation From Beyond the Grave on the Future of Mixed-Age Education in Second Life

Below is the rough script from Barry Joseph's presentation at the Virtual Worlds - Best Practices in Education conference.

The set up was GlobalKids Bixby, in a bee costume, standing in front of an open casket, within which lay the teen grid avatar of Barry Gkid.

Teen Second Life is Dead; Long Live the Mixed-Age Second Life Grid.

Almost three years ago, residents of the youth-only Teen Second Life held a protest march, walking (and flying) en masse across all teen public lands. Their slogans and placards reflected demands which only make sense in the context of a virtual world: grid merger, which is to say, eliminate the teen grid by combining it with the adult-only main grid. Merge the economies. Merge the social space. Merge… Continue

No Respect: Devaluing the Consequentiality of Online Communities

Global Kids’ recent featured interview in the RezEd podcast series on education and virtual worlds focused on the results of the most significant study to date on youth and online safety. The results of the study, and how they were rejected by the very players who called for the study, provided me with some valuable insights regarding the challenges to using online communities for education and civic… Continue

On Plans to Turn Second Life from an Age-segregated to a Mixed-Age Virtual World

If Linden Lab turns Second Life into a mixed-age grid we should not presume that, as night must follow day, that the need has passed for their youth-only grid, Teen Second Life (TSL). I would argue, in fact, that just the opposite is true, that the promise offered by TSL has yet to be realized and that replacing it with a mixed-age grid will only exacerbate existing problems that prevent youth from taking full advantage of this remarkable space.

The future of TSL has been in question… Continue

What research question would you fund to generate data on learning and virtual worlds?

The University of Southern California’s Network Culture Project has invited Global Kids to participate in a small forum to discuss the compilation of an upcoming volume on virtual worlds, digital media and learning. The volume, supported by the MacArthur Foundation, is intended to define a collective vision for virtual worlds and to outline a multi-year research agenda.

As we prepare for the meeting, I would like to invite members of the RezEd community to weigh in and contribute to… Continue

Hi Barry,
Just a short note to say that I note you are using an online publishing tool (issuu) for the Ethics report. It is a nice tool, but I wanted to give you the link to one I've used called YUDU (located in London, UK). I like yudu because it gives the reader more interactivity. In a long report or publication, one can place stickie notes on pages to use in a variety of ways, it allows zoooming, printing only those pages chosen, and it is carbon neutral (as is issuu). Take a look: http://beta.yudu.com/
Something for your later/hmmmm file.. BTW: The Ethics report is excellent!
