Carrie, type of access depends on the resource. The catalog and AAL are open to anyone, of course. There are free eResources such as FirstGov that are also available. For the rest some authentication is required and for the most part it is a "single sign-on" process that provides access to all resources (EBSCO, Gale, etc.). Accessing all of this from within SL still requires use of a browser - either the one supplied by SL, as we do it, or by popping a window and opening an external browser. One day, ideally, we will be able to provide direct access within SL and maintain an authentication portal there, as well.
Hi, Carrie. Thanks for friendship! In SL we offer access to our eResources, the catalog and a couple of websites including Ask a Librarian services. It doesn't get a lot of traffic, but it is a start. We also have an application in Facebook that searches resources:
Hi, Carrie. I am just another soul trying to build a network here. I work for the College Center for Library Automation in Florida. We provide for our 28 Community Colleges access to research databases, a unified library catalog and a library management system. We have had a presence in Second Life for about 18 months and provide access to many of those services from within the virtual world. You can find us here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eduisland%203/34/216/23
I offered you friendship...maybe we can help each other.
Whoa! That is terrific news!!!! Oh don't sweat - we all have so many gadgets and inventory we'll set you right up - I got a great visitor counter, obscene amounts of furniture, yada, yada. Setting up a library in SL in somewhat like a barn raising of old - we all just fling a prim or two, rezz some things outta inventory and voila, got a library. Grats!
You mean you have a library in world? That would be SWEEET.

About Me:
I'm fascinated with the potential for collections and service delivery in 3D environments. I'm currently immersed in SL, working on a couple of immersive education sites. I have also just been asked by my home (aka non-digital) institution, Harvard College Library, to develop a site in SL.
