"Hey Erik, Have you found any really good turtorials online, that are easy to follow, that would be good to help the students start to learn how to build objects and design more complex avatars?"

"Yeah we used the Diva release you mentioned from the beginning. We were in the process of trying to figure out how to get it to work, when your first message came along, so we just went with it, and it loaded without a hitch."

Getting over the Cost Issue

Hi everyone,

I am trying to get approval to start using Teen Second Life in my Middle School, as part of the curriculum. My district seems very open to trying it, but is very slow in giving me the ok because of the issue of cost. Right now I am trying to find a cheaper, or even free alternative to Second Life, that would allow us the same range of world creation tools. The project we have lined up includes the students building their own city, so having the building and design… Continue

I have few enough students using it that I just create the accounts manually. I have maybe 40 students total with accounts.

You mean the students will want to remove all the clothes? I doubt it, unless you could somehow edit the default skin texture to have a shirt and pants, maybe like long johns. I don't know how you would do that. I depend on social inhibition and avoiding institutional consequences to keep that from happening, since all avatars are immediately identifiable by name.

Here are a few:
Youtube video covering the basics, pretty clear for students. The part at the end about linking is important for making objects with several linked prims.
Another by the same, about texturing objects.
This person takes an approach to building that's a little over the top, including math, but the concept of planning before you build, drawing it out on paper, is helpful if you are making something with windows, etc. The reality is you can't just hollow out a shape and cut windows in it.

That answer is a little complicated and I'm sorry I don't have the most helpful answer. I currently have a sim with a single region, which is 256X256 meters. It seems like a meter in the sim is equivalent to a real world meter. The avatars seem to be about 2 m. I think that would be big enough but you would probably push against the boundaries if your city is extensively built out. I would love to connect multiple regions but I don't know how and don't have time to figure out how to do it manually. There is a new development with this Diva distribution in which it by default supports a new standard of 'megaregions', or seamlessly stitched together regions, and the default is 2X2. I don't know how that works, though, in terms of working with each on the command line, etc. All I know is the command 'change region' so that's where I'll be starting if I can get Diva up and running.

There seem to be a few approaches, but what I did was go here and download all the png files. From that I realized a terrain file is just different gray values with the values being equal to the elevation. Well, not really, water level (20m) is equal to RGB of about 50, 50, 50, then you can guess from there. I'm sure someone has a scale posted somewhere. So I edited the files in photoshop and made a couple of my own to get used to it, then loaded one into the region and did some touch-ups with the terrain tool.
