ARVEL ning gets a new forum

IRB and Other Research Protocols forum.
Since the Virtual Worlds Research Discussion group no longer meets, it would be a shame not to archive those discussions. So I am hoping that SLEDers and SLRLers will come to the forum and add their wisdom there. Once the ARVEL wiki opens, we'll transfer the gold nuggets of those discussions from the ning forum to the wiki.

Hi, Sabine. Sure, I'd be happy to discuss workshops on creating animations and gestures. I actually have a pressing need to develop a new gesture or two in the fairly near future, so the timing isn't too bad. Let's coordinate on a time we can meet -- perhaps in-world -- to discuss further. I'm actually fairly flexible in my availability.

Kind regards,
Mike/Paribus

Well, here is my article which appeared in the double issue on Holography in Leonardo a bit of time ago.........

As I learn and explore Second Life I see many of the ideas I had on how perceptual can influence conceptual understanding.

Here is a short excerpt

I came across the concept of "social realism" when reading curator's notes at an exhibition in Glasgow, Scotland, some years ago. Subsequent to that (very brief) exposure, I have seen it discussed in a number of articles about its use in the development of gaming scenarios. Alexander Galloway has an article entitled Social Realism in Gaming that you might want to read. I believe that his conclusion was that there is a "congruence requirement" that must be fulfilled before social realism can be achieved in gaming environments, i.e., that there must be some kind of fidelity of context between the gamer in gaming situ and his or her r/l social reality.

Gallowan, A.R. (2004, Nov.). Social realism in gaming. The international journal of computer game research, Vol. 4(1).

Sabine Reljic/Willow Shenlin, I am two weeks old in Second Life terms and investigating it on an extremely part time basis whilst teaching full time at a new institution. Until I'm more familiar with the environment and its possibilities, I am probably not the best person/avatar to be sharing observations with respect to the implications of instructional communication in avatar-mediated environments.

With respect to using "the" network theory to explain social interaction and effective instructional communication in SL, I can see that you have a similar issue as that which you have described in your second message with respect to using terms appropriately. As you well know, a number of academic areas have "claimed" the concept of network theories. However, although operational definitions are similar in most cases, they are not the same. If we are talking about network theory in the broadest sense, as social networks with connecting nodes (i.e., individuals and/or organizations) that are bound to one another by a number of shared characteristics (friendship, values, commodities, etc.), then we can certainly use such a theory in a manner such as I believe you are suggesting.

I think the problem with 1.20 is that LL, like many software outfits, is putting more and more demand on the hardware. In other words, superseding, or obsoleting, my machines. This may narrow the audience instead of broadening it. Also, I haven't managed to figure out the new camera controls.
