Erik Nauman Using OpenSim? Try Diva Distribution

OpenSimulator developer Diva has released a binary distribution of the OpenSim software that incorporates recent innovations like megaregions, default ODE physics, better inventory management, and several bug fixes. The good documentation is a welcome development. The best feature is an update.exe that incorporates recent developments more easily. Whether you're just starting with OpenSim or upgrading, it's a great alternative… Continue

Dave Hammers Getting over the Cost Issue

Hi everyone, I am trying to get approval to start using Teen Second Life in my Middle School, as part of the curriculum. My district seems very open to trying it, but is very slow in giving me the ok because of the issue of cost. Right now I am trying to find a cheaper, or even free alternative to Second Life, that would allow us the same range of world creation tools. The project we have lined up includes the students building their own city, so having the building and design options is an abs… Continue

Erik Nauman Anyone using OpenSim in the classroom?

I've been stretching OpenSim to the limit on our school's LAN, even over wireless, though I've ditched that in favor of wires, and I'd love to connect with anyone else using it in this context. I'm particularly interested in improving voice chat and inventory storage and accessibility, general latency issues. And scripting! There's so much to learn and the students are really excited. I just want to get it running as well as I can so other teachers catch the enthusiasm. Continue

Sabine Reljic / Willow Shenlin ARVEL ning gets a new forum

IRB and Other Research Protocols forum. Since the Virtual Worlds Research Discussion group no longer meets, it would be a shame not to archive those discussions. So I am hoping that SLEDers and SLRLers will come to the forum and add their wisdom there. Once the ARVEL wiki opens, we'll transfer the gold nuggets of those discussions from the ning forum to the wiki. http://arvelsig.ning.com/ Continue
